Welcome Back to School Letter 2018

family

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I am thrilled to be your child’s fourth grade teacher this year at La Costa Meadows Elementary School. I taught fourth grade in Mequon, Wisconsin for 6 years before moving to California in 2001. After moving, I became a stay at home mom until our three children were all in school. This is start of my eleventh year teaching fourth grade at La Costa Meadows.

I live in San Marcos with my husband, Patrick and our children Alec, Gavin and Hadley. Alec will begin his second year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo studying biomedical engineering. Gavin is a junior at San Marcos High School, and Hadley is a freshman at San Marcos High School. When I am not at school, I am usually on a field, court, or theater somewhere in California cheering on our children at one of their many games/events: football, basketball, and dance! I also love to read, go to the beach, travel, shop, cook, and spend time with family and friends.

This will be a very fun and productive year for your child. The fourth grade curriculum is challenging and exciting. Your fourth grader can look forward to many literature projects, challenging math activities, with an emphasis on using problem solving strategies, hands on science, and learning about California history. Our field trips reinforce and enrich our curriculum.

My goal is for this to be a very special school year for your child. I feel the best way to achieve this is through a partnership with each of you. I encourage as much participation as your schedule will allow. I also want you to feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions or concerns about your child’s education or classroom events.  Email is the best way to communicate with me. My school address is: caren.cherveny@smusd.org. When needing immediate attention, please contact the school office at 760-290-2121 and follow the prompts.

Our school provides some basic school supplies. In addition, I am asking that each family considers donating materials that we will use daily, in our classroom. Please see the list on my classroom webpage for items needed. All donations are appreciated!

Some important information regarding our daily schedule is as follows:
8:45  School Begins
11:10-11:30  Recess
12:35-1:20  Lunch/Recess
3:10  Dismissal (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday)
2:10  Dismissal (Wednesday)

I will go into more detail regarding our daily classroom schedule, curriculum, and the "nuts and bolts" of fourth grade at Back to School Night. I hope you will join me on Thursday, August 23rd. Back to School Night is an evening for parents. Please click on the Back to School Night invitation on my webpage for specific information. I look forward to a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,

Caren Cherveny, 4th Grade
