Welcome to 4th and 5th Grade!

August 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our classroom!  I am so happy your child is in my class this year! This is my second year teaching a 4th/5th combo after teaching 4thgrade for six years here at LCM.  I previously taught 6th grade for 4 years in Oxnard, California and then 6th grade Math and Science at Woodland Park Middle School for 4 years. I am thrilled to be teaching the 4/5 combo again and feel fortunate to be able to share my passion for teaching with you and your child this year.

This will be an especially exciting year, as our combo 4th/5th grade class presents a unique opportunity for your child.  My goal is to provide a positive learning environment that focuses on cooperative learning, promotes cognitive and social growth, and empowers students to take ownership of their learning. Students will gain confidence and develop leadership skills in a collaborative setting and also benefit from project-based and inquiry learning.  I am looking forward to a fun, memorable, and enriching year.

The fourth and fifth grade curriculums are stimulating and engaging! Your child can look forward to literature projects, challenging math with an emphasis on using problem solving strategies, hands on science, and learning about California history (4th grade) or United States history (5thgrade) in Social Studies. We also have wonderful field trips planned that will reinforce and enrich our curriculum.

I hope to make this a very special school year for your child.  I work very hard to create a community environment in my classroom based on mutual respect, and feel the best way to achieve this is through a partnership with each of you.  Parent involvement is encouraged, and you are welcome to visit and participate in our classroom.  I also want you to feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions or concerns.  My number at school is 760-290-2121 (extension 3107).  If you have access to email, the best way to contact me is through my school email address: susan.smith@smusd.org.
