Character Education: 7 Habits and The Dolphin Way

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids

At La Costa Meadows Elementary, we highlight The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, as detailed in the book of the same name by Sean Covey.

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids are:

1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the End in Mind
3. Put First Things First
4. Think Win-Win
5. Seek to Understand and Be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw

Once a month during Flag Salute we recognize our Students of the Month -- students whom teachers have observed going above and beyond in one or more of the seven habits.

Additionally, we choose one trait per year to focus on as a school. This year, our focus trait is synergizecombining or coordinating the activity of two or more to produce a joint effort greater than the sum of their separate actions.

The Dolphin Way

Students are encouraged to "Live the Dolphin Way" -- to do the right thing when no one is looking. Some ways our students show this is by picking up litter without being asked, noticing someone on the Friendship Bench and spending time with them, essentially being a good and kind student because it's the right thing to do.

Every once in a while, a coveted Dolphin Ticket is presented from staff members to a student who has exemplified what it means to Live the Dolphin Way.
